Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Prep Your Ingredients - Begin by rinsing and draining the black beans. Chop the yellow onion, cilantro, and jalapeño, and mince the garlic.
  2. Step 2: Combine the Ingredients - In a mixing bowl, combine the black beans, chopped onion, cilantro, minced garlic, diced jalapeño, lime juice, cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Step 3: Mash or Blend - Using a fork or potato masher, mash the mixture to your desired texture. If you prefer a smoother dip, transfer the mixture to a food processor and blend until creamy.
  4. Step 4: Taste and Adjust - Give your dip a taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If you like it spicier, consider adding more jalapeño or a dash of hot sauce.
  5. Step 5: Serve and Garnish - Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and sprinkle with cotija cheese if desired. Serve with tortilla chips, fresh veggies, or use it as a spread for sandwiches.
